It was on this day in 2002 that Cary Stayner was sentenced to the death penalty, later overturned to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Cary is the older brother of Steven Stayner, who was a victim of abduction in a highly publicized case. However, Cary was not known as a heroic child like his brother, but quite the opposite. He was known for being a serial killer in Yosemite National Park while working at a motel just by the entrance. On March 18, 1999, 42-year-old Carole Evon Sund along with 16-year-old Argentine exchange student Silvina Pelosso were discovered in the trunk of Carole’s rented Pontiac. Carole had a teenage daughter, Juliana. A week later after the remains were found, a note was sent to the police with a hand-drawn map indicating the location of his third victim - Juliana.
