–Nasogastric (NG) Tubes Explained – Nasogastric tubes (NGT) are inserted into the nose and advanced down into the esophagus, ending up in the stomach. (Naso = nose & gastric = stomach) So, think… Nose to stomach! They can be used for: 🫧Decompression of the stomach 💊Administration of nutrition or medication 💤Allowing the bowel to rest during an obstruction As nurses, where do we come in? NG tube insertion, care, and use are frequently encountered nursing skills. Here are some NCLEX tips in addition to what’s given in this reel 🙂: - X-Ray is the gold standard for NGT placement confirmation -MARK the tube with marker and secure with tape once placed. Any deviation from this will allow you to better understand if the tube has moved! -Encourage the patient to sip water and swallow to advance the tube -Always measure output from the NGT if attached to suction.
